By Deputy Fire Chief Bryan Riley
July 16, 2013

At 0344 hours Station 7, Station 1, Station 9, Station 3, Water Supply 5, EMS Station 79, EMS Station 19, and St. Mary's ALS were dispatched to 25307 Sotterley Road for the House Fire with people trapped. Chief 7(Brady), Chief 7A(Insley), Chief 7B(Riley), Engine 73, Engine 74, and Truck 7 responded on the incident with 18 Volunteers.

Chief 7B was first to arrive at 0348 hours to find a 1 1/2 story single family residence with smoke showing, with Chief 7A arriving seconds later. Both Chiefs made contact with neighbors in the front yard who reported one occupant trapped on the second floor. Chief 7A advised Chief 7, who was responding, that both Chief 7A and Chief 7B would be entering the structure for a search and would be without a hand line. Once inside the structure the Chiefs were met with moderate smoke condition and fire showing from a back room being held by a door. Due to only having one SCBA being utilized by Chief 7B, smoke and fire pushed Chief 7A to the floor. Chief 7B made his way towards the stairway and was able to utilize the light from the fire to locate the occupant at the base of the steps who was unresponsive. Chief 7B started to remove the occupant and was met by Chief 7A in the living room area. Both Chiefs worked together to remove the occupant to the front door. Once at the front door Firefighter Nelson assisted with removing the victim to the front yard.

At the same time, Engine 73 and Chief 7 arrived with Chief 7 establishing the "Hollywood" Command. The crew of Engine 73 advanced a hand line to side "A" of the structure while Fire and EMS personnel started CPR on the occupant of the residence. Truck 7 arrived and was advised to complete a secondary search of the structure and assist Engine 73 with "Fire Attack". The secondary search was conducting with negative results of the entire structure and ladders placed on all sides of the house. Engine 73's crew found a room off on the back side of the structure and extinguished the same. Engine 93 arrived and supplied Engine 73 with the crew stretching a line to the second floor to check for any extension.

While the fire crews were operating on the inside of the structure, Chief 7A, Chief 7B, Medic 1 and Ambulance 797 were performing CPR on the occupant of the structure. After several minutes of CPR the patient regained a pulse and a Medevac was requested for transport. Engine 91 was requested by Command to establish the Landing Zone for Trooper 7 in a nearby field. The patient was transported by Trooper 7 to MedStar at Washington Hospital Center as a Priority 1 Category A.

Once the fire was determined to be out and no more extension found, Command held the units from Station 7 and returned the rest of the assignment at 0428 hours. Engine 73 and Truck 7 remained on the scene assisting the Fire Marshal's Office with their investigation. Command was terminated at 0449 hours and the units from Station 7 returned to quarters at 0635 hours.

Due to the quick actions and response of Fire and EMS personnel on this incident, the trapped occupant was removed from the structure and regained a pulse on the scene. The patient was quickly transported to Medstar at Washington Hospital Center but later succumbed to his injuries.

The Officers and Members of the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department wish to send our condolences to everyone this incident affected.
