On Friday September 25 and Saturday September 26, several members from Hollywood participated in the Big Rig Rescue Class sponsored by Mechanicsville VFD. The class was taught by Billy Leach Jr. who has conducted training in vehicle rescue for Firehouse Expo, Fire Rescue Magazine's First Due Conference, FDNY's Technical Rescue School, and many other regional fire/rescue training seminars. Mr. Leach has been involved in Emergency services since 1976 and is a senior presenter and planner for Big Rig Rescue.

The first day of class was all class room with the instructor going over the Level 1 portion of the class. The Level 1 Portion on the Big Rig Rescue Class is based on Heavy lifting and Stabilization of Large Vehicles. Members went over the 5 step discipline for overturns and under rides with different techniques for both. On Saturday the members had an opportunity to demonstrate the techniques taught from the night before. Four different scenarios were set up all dealing with overturned vehicles or under rides of Large Vehicles. Every scenario was a challenge with either stabilizing or lifting the large vehicles. After all the scenarios were completed, everyone had an opportunity to watch the recovery vehicles do what they do best. The towing companies up righted a tractor trailer that was on top of another vehicle using air bags and the winches on the tow trucks. At the end of the day everyone had the chance to see what it takes to safely secure these large vehicles and lift them for rescue.

Special thanks to Mechanicsville VFD, TEAMEXTREME Big Rig Rescue, The Auto Barn Towing and Recovery, Charlie's Towing, G & M Towing, and Paratech.

Companies involved in the Class: Mechanicsville, Hollywood, Second District, Hughesville, Waldorf, LaPlata, Bryans Road, St Leonard, Prince Frederick, Hyattsville, and Elkridge VFD's.
