Building Collapse At St John's School

By Firefighter Ernest Rogers
February 6, 2010

While units were operating on numerous calls during the snow storm Company 7 was dispatched to the St John's School for a General Fire Alarm. The only available unit was Engine 74 who responded at dispatch under the direction of Deputy Chief D. Brady, Sr. Engine 74 arrived on the scene minutes later advising communications he had a complete building collapse in the classroom portion of St. John's School. At that time Squad 7 (F/F Rogers) responded from Nalley Road as they were already on the scene of another incident. Squad 7 and the Fire Chief (DJ Brady) arrived on the scene minutes after arrival of the Engine and began to strategize on the plan of attack. The building was clearly unoccupied so the crew's main task was too secure the power to the entire structure which was completed by the crews on the scene and SMECO as they were requested at a priority level. The crews then blocked access to any part of the structure that was affected and at that time all operations at the scene were ceased. No fire department services could further assist the school as the pastor was than advised on the proper authorities to call into the scene.
