Engine and Truck to 2nd Alarm House Fire

By Captain Bryan Riley
July 1, 2008

At 0247 hours Station 3 (Bay District), Station 13 (NAS Pax River), and EMS Station 39 (Lexington Park) were dispatched to 21570 Columbia St in Hermanville for the report of a House Fire. Engine 32 and Engine 132 arrived together to find a 2 story single family with fire showing from the first and second floor windows and the roof. With the on scene report of a working fire the assignment was upgraded to a working house fire bringing Station 9 (California) and Water Supply 5 (Seventh District). Chief 3A arrived on the scene and due to the fire load requested a second alarm to be sounded. This alerted Station 4 (Ridge), Station 6 (Valley Lee), and Station 7 (Hollywood) for the Engine and the Truck. Chief 3A advised all units that this was a defensive operation and Truck 3 would be setting up for ladder pipe. Engine 73 and Truck 7 responded with 9 volunteers and arrived as the 2nd company on the 2nd Alarm. Engine 73 secured Engine 91 water supply while Truck 7 positioned on side A of the structure. The Officer of Engine 73 was given the task of manpower pool officer while the crew from Truck 7 threw ground ladders to sides A and C of the structure. The crews from Hollywood worked together performing several duties on the fire ground such as fire suppression, search, and overhaul. The units from Hollywood remained on the scene for an hour and a half before returning to service. Chief 3 (Johnson) held the Columbia St Command while Chief 3A (Gould) was the Operation Officer.

While Engine 73 and Truck 7 were operating on the Working Fire Engine 74 with 5 personnel handled an Automatic Fire Alarm in Station 9's area. This means that there were a total of 14 Volunteers up serving the community at 3am while most people are home sleeping.
