By Deputy Fire Chief Bryan Riley
November 25, 2012

At 1628 hours Station 9, Station 3, Station 6, Station 7, EMS Station 38 and 39 were dispatched to 21724 Garfield St. in Great Mills for the House Fire. Engine 73, Truck 7, and Chief 7B (Riley) responded shortly after dispatch with 10 volunteers. First arriving units from Bay District arrived on the scene to find a one story single family residence with fire showing from side "A" of the structure. Engine 73 arrived on the scene and the crew pulled a second line to the structure to back up Engine 32 as the attack crew. Prior to entering the structure a firefighter from Engine 32 was seen at a window requesting help. The firefighter advised he was burning and had fallen through the floor. The members of Engine 73 assisted the firefighter from the window and removed him away from the structure. A Mayday was declared due to the unknown status of the remaining crew of Engine 32. Once contact was made to the OIC of Engine 32 and found to be OK, the Mayday was cleared. Two members of Engine 73 assisted the down firefighter until EMS arrived on side "A". The other members of Engine 73 along with Truck 7 assisted with fire attack and the extension in the attic. Crews remained on the scene and assisted with overhaul before returning to service. Chief 3 (Downs) held the Garfield Street Command and units from Station 7 returned to quarters at 1746 hours.
